Futures for Bigland

Introduction

The scenarios begin in the year 2000 and extend to 2040. Three scenarios are presented: Business as Usual, New Directions and Troubled Times. Scenarios are developed for two regions: North Region and South Region. The main themes explored in the scenarios are Economics, Demographics and Technology. The forces driving the scenarios forward are Agricultural Productivity and Cooperation.

For Business as Usual

Development continues along the historical path (Rogers et al., 2004) that led to the autonomy of North Region.

For New Directions

A new partnership between the regions leads to an improved economic situation for North Region and a more stable border between the regions.

For Troubled Times

Troubles at the border continue. The economic situation in North Region continues to worsen (Frank, 1998) . South Region dissolves its historical ties to North Region, preferring to develop international ties.
